Jazz Fest

Jazz Fest

New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, is a city that pulses with music, culture, and rich traditions. And when it comes to celebrating the spirit of this vibrant city, there's no event quite like the New Orleans Jazz Fest. From soulful melodies to energetic brass bands, the festival is a musical pilgrimage that captures the essence of New Orleans. In this blog post, I'll delve into the magical experience of attending Jazz Fest, the benefits of a WWOZ Brass Pass, the importance of bringing an umbrella, and some unforgettable performances featuring the Zulu Ensemble, Flagboy Giz, Irma Thomas, a tribute to Walter Wolfman Washington, and Big Sam.

For true music enthusiasts, the WWOZ Brass Pass is a golden ticket to a world of unparalleled musical experiences. This all-access pass immerses you in the festival's various stages, venues, and genres. With the Brass Pass, you have the freedom to explore the vast array of performances at your own pace, ensuring you don't miss out on any hidden gems. From intimate jazz sets to raucous brass band shows, the Brass Pass provides an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the rich musical tapestry that is New Orleans. Most importantly, it allows you to go in and out to sit at Jockey’s Pub on Gentilly and access the mist tent with fruit and iced coffee. A retreat plan is key for older festival goers like myself.

When it comes to attending Jazz Fest, the weather can be as lively as the music itself. New Orleans is known for its occasional downpours and unpredictable weather patterns. That's where the humble umbrella comes into play. Packing a sturdy umbrella in your bag ensures that you can dance, sway, and enjoy the festival come rain or shine. As the skies open up, you'll find yourself weaving through a sea of vibrant umbrellas, creating a kaleidoscope of colors and adding to the festival's unique atmosphere. So, be prepared, and let the rain only enhance your experience. The only time the umbrella is more useful than the rain is in the sun. Keeping the sun off is more important than keeping the rain off, and it gives you something to dance with. See the Jazz Fest logo, they all have umbrellas.

On Sunday morning, as the sun gently rises over New Orleans, the Gospel Tent becomes a haven for soul-stirring performances. One standout act is the Zulu Ensemble, known for infusing gospel music with the spirit of New Orleans. Their powerful harmonies and spirited renditions will transport you to a world where faith, music, and culture intertwine. As you join fellow festival-goers in heartfelt sing-alongs, the energy and positivity that radiate from the Gospel Tent create a truly uplifting and spiritual experience. The gospel tent is church.

The Heritage Stage at Jazz Fest is a treasure trove of traditional New Orleans music and cultural performances. Among the talented artists who grace this stage, Flagboy Giz stands out as a symbol of New Orleans' rich Mardi Gras Indian heritage. With intricate feathered costumes, mesmerizing footwork, and a captivating stage presence, Flagboy Giz and his tribe embody the spirit of resilience and cultural pride that runs deep in the veins of New Orleans. Witnessing their vibrant performances is like witnessing a living piece of history come alive before your eyes. This was my favorite act of the fest.

Jazz Fest is renowned for its lineup of legendary musicians, and three performers who have left an indelible mark on the festival are Irma Thomas, Walter Wolfman Washington, and Big Sam. Known as the "Soul Queen of New Orleans," Irma Thomas enchants audiences with her powerful voice and emotional depth. Big Sam's Funky Nation ignites the crowd with their high-energy brass funk fusion. Walter Wolfman Washington brought his infectious guitar riffs and soulful blues to the stage year after year and he was missed very much this year. These artists embody the spirit of New Orleans, leaving their audiences in awe and eager for more.

Attending the New Orleans Jazz Fest is an extraordinary journey that transcends music, embracing our city's rich culture, traditions, and vibrant atmosphere. With a WWOZ Brass Pass in hand, you can navigate through a diverse range of performances, discovering hidden gems along the way. Don't forget to bring your umbrella to dance through the occasional rain showers and create a kaleidoscope of colors. From the spiritual sounds of the Zulu Ensemble in the Gospel Tent to the captivating performances of Flagboy Giz on the Heritage Stage and the legendary talent of Irma Thomas, Lizzo, and Big Sam, Jazz Fest offers an unforgettable experience that showcases the magic of New Orleans' music scene. So, grab your Brass Pass, embrace the rhythm, and dowhatchawanna.
